Fatigue Is a Key Contributor to Quality of Life in Heart Valve Disease and After Valve Replacement/Repair: A Qualitative Study

Heart valve disease (HVD) can cause morbidity and impairment of quality of life (QOL) both before and after intervention. However, descriptions of the QOL of people with HVD across the disease course are limited. We aimed to collect the experience of people living with HVD through qualitative interviews, focusing on how HVD impacts their self-perceived QOL.

An open repository of COVID-19 vaccine mandate studies with a worked scoping review of quasi-experimental evidence

Vaccine mandates were widely implemented against COVID-19, and a large and multidisciplinary literature has emerged as a result, covering fields such as epidemiology, economics, ethics, and law. We compiled an openly available repository of this literature, including 503 studies on COVID-19 vaccine mandates. 

Pharmacokinetics of a three-dose regimen of intramuscular benzathine penicillin G in pregnant women with syphilis

Syphilis remains a global public health concern, particularly in pregnancy due to the risk of congenital syphilis. The WHO recommends benzathine penicillin G (BPG) as the standard treatment in pregnant women, whilst the optimal dosing strategy has not been established, particularly in relation to the impact of gestational age. This study sought to characterize the pharmacokinetics (PK) of a three-dose regimen of intramuscular BPG, given at weekly intervals, in pregnant women with syphilis.

Ingredients to Mask the Aversive Taste of Medicines: Lessons from the Pharmaceutical and Food Industries and Home Remedies Adopted by Caregivers

Many approved oral paediatric medicines continue to have poor taste acceptance, suggesting that the ingredient blends employed in these medicines are not adequately effective in taste-masking drugs with strongly aversive tastes. To address this inadequacy, this narrative review provides a comparative evaluation of taste-masking ingredients used by the pharmaceutical industry with those employed in the food industry, as well as food items used by caregivers to mask the unpalatable taste of medicines for young children.

BEAT-BK: An Adaptive, Randomized Controlled Trial to Treat Polyomavirus Infections (BKPyV) in Kidney and Kidney-pancreas Transplantation Recipients (BEAT-BK) Study Protocol

BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) is a common opportunistic infection in kidney transplant recipients, typically reactivating in the context of immunosuppression. Although asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, reactivation in transplant recipients can cause BKPyV-associated nephropathy (BKPyVAN), a leading cause of graft dysfunction and loss. BKPyV viremia affects approximately 10%-15% of transplant recipients, and once BKPyVAN is established, the risk of graft failure can exceed 50%.

Two RSV immunisations products: a maternal vaccine, Abrysvo, and a long-acting monoclonal antibody, nirsevimab, both designed to prevent RSV illness in infants, have recently become available. Modelling evidence is required to inform how to optimally use these products in immunisation programs to reduce the burden of RSV in young children.
